Downloading the Structural Material Manager Demo

You may download a fully‐functional Structural Material Manager demo from the E.J.E. Industries Web site.

You can read below for instructions on downloading the demo. You may also wish to click here to view a video that discusses how the demo can be installed and activated.

Before beginning, let‘s get an overview of the procedures that will be followed. You‘ll be using your Internet browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.) to download a Structural Material Manager system from our Website. The system is stored in the form of a self‐extracting archive named Demo.Exe. Since .Exe is registered under Windows as a well‐known file extension, the .Exe part is usually assumed and is not actually displayed. You‘ll simply use your browser to save this Demo file to some location on your PC, and you‘ll later run Demo to install Structural Material Manager.

The PC on which you run Structural Material Manager and that on which you access the Internet will usually be the same. However, in the event that they are not, note that you can download the Demo file on a PC that has Internet access, copy it to some sort of high-capacity media such as a USB Flash Drive, and later bring that media to the PC on which you want to install the Structural Material Manager demo.

Now that the overview has familiarized you with the basic strategy, follow these steps:

1) If you already have some version of the Structural Material Manager demo installed and wish to upgrade it, you do not need to remove the current demo before loading the new one. All jobs you have in the previous demo will still be accessible after installing the new one. If you value the jobs that are present in the old demo, please answer "Yes" when the new demo‘s setup program asks whether a backup can be made before installation.

2) You can download the Demo file either from our HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) server or our FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server.

All browsers support HTTP transfers, and HTTP should thus be your first choice. Click here to download from the HTTP Server.

We maintain FTP support only as a second choice for those experiencing trouble downloading from the HTTP server. The reason: FTP support has been removed from the latest versions of all mainstream browsers such as Chrome, Edge and Firefox. A legacy browser such as Internet Explorer, or a modern browser such as Edge run in Internet Explorer mode, may thus be needed for FTP transfers. Click here to try the FTP Server if, and only if, you experienced trouble with the HTTP download. If clicking the FTP link appears to do absolutely nothing, or if you are asked to choose an application to handle the FTP download, it is a sure sign that your browser does not support FTP downloads.

3) Clicking one of the above links Clicking the above link should cause your browser to download the Demo file. The exact way the download is represented varies from browser to browser, but most modern browsers display the download progress in the lower-left or upper-right corner of the window.

It is possible that your browser wiil ask whether you want to run the Demo file or save it. If this question appears, choose to save the file.

4) Once the Demo file is finished downloading, do whatever your browser requires to open (run) it.

5) You can close the browser once the downloaded Demo file is opened, as the Internet phase of the process is now done.

6) Most users probably downloaded the Demo file to the same machine on which they will install Structural Material Manager. You may simply proceed to the next step if this indeed describes your situation. If necessary, however, computer-literate users can copy the Demo file from the hard drive to a USB Flash Drive or other high-capacity media which can later be brought to another PC. No specific directions will be presented here on how to do this since the required procedures vary greatly among different PCs and Windows versions. Copy the Demo file to such media at this time only if necessary (perhaps because you don‘t have Internet access at the machine on which Structural Material Manager is to be installed).

7) At the Windows Desktop, open File Explorer from the taskbar. Browse through the folders until you find the one (such as Downloads or Desktop) in which the Demo file was saved. Double‐click on the downloaded file, Demo or whatever name your browser may have substituted, in order for it to execute.

Windows may ask for permission to run the Demo file. After you grant such permission, the Structural Material Manager demo‘s setup utility will automatically appear.

8) If an error message appears upon executing the self‐extracting Demo archive, then the downloaded file is possibly corrupt. If you do get an error message, simply download the file again. Note that it makes sense to switch to a different E.J.E. Industries server if you are experiencing problems. For instance, if a download from our HTTP server did not work, try the FTP server the next time. Remember that in order to access the FTP server, you may need a legacy browser such as Internet Explorer or a modern browser such as Edge in Internet Explorer mode.

If downloading Demo.Exe a second time does not eliminate error messages, interference from an antivirus program is likely the source of the problem. A "false positive" has probably occurred, and the file is being treated as though it is infected despite the fact that it is not. Temporarily disable your antivirus program‘s realtime protection (disabling for 10 minutes will be much longer than needed), and try the download again.

In extreme cases of interference from an antivirus program, you can try downloading the Demo.Zip archive rather than the Demo.Exe self-extracting installer. Antivirus programs will often give .Zip files less scrutiny than their .Exe counterparts which makes this worth a try. Demo.Zip can be downloaded from both the HTTP Server (available in all browsers) or the FTP Server (available only in legacy browsers). Unlike Demo.Exe which can be run directly, the contents of Demo.Zip will need extracted to some location on your PC. You may wish to extract the numerous files cotained therein to the "Downloads" area of your PC or some other easy-to-find location. Regardless of where you extract the files, SetupSMM.Exe is the program you‘ll then launch.
